Adrenaline/Nerves do funny things to the mind. People here are too sure that they can tell the difference but its one thing stating this from behind a keyboard or down a range, its another when your in a execution squad and knowingly going to take a life. Even if you think / know the recoil is off, maybe its off because you have been handed a different weapon.
That is the point of the blank bullet, your never 100% sure that you really fired a real one. May it was the stress of the situation, made you think the recoil was different. So if you state, it was a blank = innocent in the eyes of family/friends/society. Its not a war action and is kind of frowned upon in society. You do not exactly want to go around telling, that you execute somebody. Quinton his story may also be inaccurate, in the sense that he tells others that his bullet was blank. Used to be blanks, later this was switched to wax bullets. In more recent times, such as the 2010 execution of Ronnie Lee Gardner in Utah, US, one rifleman may be given a "dummy" cartridge containing a wax bullet, which provides a more realistic recoil. Quinton stated that "I had the satisfaction of knowing that as soon as I fired, the absence of any recoil that I had merely fired a blank cartridge".
